Natural beauty
Croatia really is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Many of her most beautiful areas are protected as national parks. The small island of Mljet is a fine example, with its picturesque saltwater lakes home to a Benedictine monastery set on a charming island, surrounded by forests. The largest of Croatia’s National Parks is the Plitvice Lakes National Park in the very heart of Croatia, in the region which connects the Adriatic coastal region with the area inland. There are three islands on the lake where visitors can enjoy walking amongst the pristine natural beauty, savouring the serene setting. Waterfalls cascade into the crystalclear waters with a canyon and even a cave to explore. It is the perfect spot to unwind and escape from the pressures of modern life. As you walk through the National Park you may really feel that you have discovered heaven on earth.

World heritage
Croatia has been conquered by many civilisations from the Romans to the Venetians, and from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Ottoman Empire. Each has left its mark in the form of a treasure trove of architectural glories. Diocletian’s splendid palace in Split was the largest private residence in the ancient world, and is still awe-inspiring today. The medieval island town of Trogir, and the picturesque old walled city of Dubrovnik are two of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

Over 1.100 Islands
The islands are a popular draw for couples beach holidays although all types of travellers will find something to enjoy on the many islands along the Dalmatian coast.  Many of the islands retain a distinctly Venetian character, especially the beautiful town of Hvar, with its piazzas and grand Venetian Gothic architecture with ornate balconies and spires. Island of Korcula is home to the famous explorer, Marco Polo, who can lay claim to having been the first travel writer, Korcula is certainly a place to inspire. It is undoubtedly one of the best-preserved Medieval and Renaissance towns in the Mediterranean. Others are natural havens, such as the island of Mljet, home to the wild mongoose, with its pine forests and azure saltwater lakes. Life on the islands - with the possible exception of sophisticated Hvar - is for the most part full of simple pleasures. Swimming from rocky coves and pebble beaches in the clear waters of the Adriatic, enjoying the warm and sunny climate, getting away from the crowds, and delighting in simple meals of grilled fish and barbecued meat or trying the local speciality of black seafood risotto.

Island Hopping in Croatia, Multi Centre Croatia Holidays
For those who want to make the most of their time away, island hopping in Croatia or a multi centre holiday is the perfect option. Diamond Sky’s flexible multi-centre holidays and island hopping allow you to combine a stay in the coastal cities of Dubrovnik or Split with a stay on choice of Adriatic islands, allowing you to have the best of both worlds.

The islands are relatively well connected so island hopping in Croatia is a pleasurable experience.  Both the mainland and islands are well connected with each other so it is easy to combine a stay in Dubrovnik or Split with a visit to one or two of the islands, or to take in a number of the islands on an island-hopping boat tour or tailor-made holiday.  You can even combine a visit to Dubrovnik with a stay in one of the Montenegrin resorts of Budva or Kotor.

Cavtat & Mlini

The sleepy resort of Cavtat is set in a picturesque bay less than 10 miles from Dubrovnik - it is the ideal choice for those who want to make the most of the beautiful sunny climate and combine sightseeing with relaxation.

Cavtat sits dreamily on the southern shores of the Rat peninsula, looking across the bay to the wooded peninsula of Sustjepan. Traditional stone houses with their red roofs emerge from cypress and pine trees surveying the clear waters of the Adriatic. The seafront promenade, which is free from cars during the summer months, is shaded by mature palm trees. Here you will find a number of laid-back bars and restaurants, which line the waterfront, where you can enjoy everything from pizza to local Dalmatian specialities and freshly-caught fish.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is sure to take your breath away - the pale stone of the ancient city walls and ornate pires stretching above the red roofs, surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Adriatic. It is no surprise that it is known as ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’

Dubrovnik’s picture-postcard looks and her idyllic location have been attracting visitors for centuries. The old walled city, with its charming piazzas and narrow streets linked by steep steps, is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. For the best views over the coast, take a walk right around the city walls, which run for just under two kilometres and are 25 metres high at their highest point.
As you wander the streets of the old town you will find new discoveries at every twist and turn. Start by walking along the Stradun, the main street, paved with gleaming marble and lined with enticing boutiques and welcoming cafes. Shop for local handicrafts, candied orange peel or fresh fruit at the morning market. One of the things which makes Dubrovnik so special is its seafront location. The old town is on a peninsula with beaches to either side, making it easy to combine sightseeing with swimming in the beautiful, crystal-clear waters and soaking up the sun.

Island of Sipan

Known as ‘the golden island’, Sipan is the largest of the Elafiti islands. It has a charming atmosphere with its quaint stone houses, grand mansions and ornate churches.

Sipan is the kind of place where your imagination can run riot - it is a fairytale island of olive groves, vineyards and abandoned monasteries and crumbling mansions.

During Ragusa’s golden age, it was popular as a summer retreat for the city’s wealthy merchants, many of whom built grand summer residences here. It is fascinating to wander amongst them now and wonder about their history and the people who once lived in them. These days there are fewer than 500 inhabitants of idyllic Sipan and the pace of life here is much more laid-back. It is a haven for holidaymakers who want to relax and get away from it all. There are two main centres on the island at opposite ends - Sudurad, where Hotel Bozica is located, and Sipanska Luka.

Korcula

The tiny Island of Korcula entices sun-seekers with its attractive beaches, beautifully preserved medieval town and crystal-clear waters.

Home to the famous explorer, Marco Polo, who can lay claim to having been the first travel writer, Korcula is certainly a place to inspire. It is undoubtedly one of the best-preserved Medieval and Renaissance towns in the Mediterranean. Its buttresses, palaces, towers and spires are a picturesque blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, mostly dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The magnificent Cathedral of St. Mark is, astonishingly, one of around 150 churches on the island which is still in use. Korcula is known for its stone-carving and you will see many fine sculptures by modern sculptors such as Krsnic and Mestrovic as well as their more ancient counterparts.

As you enter the narrow streets of the old town through the dramatic Revelin Tower, with its ancient drawbridge, it is easy to imagine the generations of visitors who have gone before you. The old town itself is relatively sleepy, although Korcula also has a mix of livelier bars and a good choice of restaurants outside the old city.

Makarska & Tucepi

This sheltered coastline of clear waters and attractive beaches, with a backdrop of the impressive Biokovo Mountain range, is a popular spot for relaxed beach holidays.

The Makarska Riviera is a hidden gem, popular with locals for its excellent climate, beautiful scenery and charming beaches. The town of Makarska is at the centre of the region and boasts a long sand and shingle beach and pine-fringed promenades. The town grew up around a natural harbour, protected by the peninsula of Sveti Petar, (Saint Peter). Once it harboured pirates; now it welcomes upmarket yachts.

Keen hikers will enjoy walking in the Biokovo Mountain range, the highest peak of which is the magnificent Sveti Jure (Saint George) at 1762 metres. For the less active, it is possible to drive to the peak to enjoy spectacular views from what is the highest peak on the Mediterranean. The mountain is protected as a National Park area.
