Island of Naxos

Naxos is the largest and the greenest of the islands of the Cyclades with dramatic mountains, fertile valleys, lush green gorges and stunning seascapes.

The architecture is an appealing blend of traditional Cycladic cubic houses, beautiful churches and monasteries and imposing Venetian castles and towers, dating from the period when Naxos flourished as the seat of the Ducat of the Aegean.

At the entrance to the port is the tiny islet of Palatia, on which stands the impressive Portara, the marble gate to a temple of Apollo dating from the 6th century BC - the mythical meeting place of Dionysus and Ariadne. The capital of Naxos, Hora, is an old castle town arranged attractively on a steep hillside with stone-paved alleys, Byzantine churches and grand Venetian mansions . Its Archaeological Museum is housed in one of these buildings and is well worth a visit.

Naxos is popular with keen ramblers and cyclists, and there are many hiking trails which cross the island offering breath-taking views. If you are feeling energetic, climb to the top of the highest mountain of Zas at just over 1000 metres, making sure to visit the beautiful cave of Zas en route and admire the impressive stalactites.

Naxos is the ideal choice for those who want to get away from it all and experience the enchantment of traditional island life. In the mountain villages, you will find that the locals still wear traditional dress and live off the land. Don’t miss the colourful village of Aperathos and Filoti, perched on top of a high rock. Nearby is the 9th-10th century church of Panayia Protothroni, with its beautiful murals. Close to Sagri lies the 6th century BC Demeter and Apollo sanctuary, made exclusively of white marble.

Naxos is the most fertile island of Cyclades, and visitors can enjoy local produce such as olive oil, wine produced from its many vineyards, and its renowned cheeses, many of which are made from goat’s of sheep’s milk.

Of course, the beaches of Naxos are also a big draw - Agia Anna on the western coast, with its golden, sandy beach is an excellent choice for swimming in the clear waters and soaking up the sun.
